A Coastal Wonderland

Homer, often referred to as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World," is renowned for its majestic landscapes and abundant marine life. But beyond its picturesque vistas lies an extraordinary ecosystem teeming with marine creatures, waiting to be explored. At low tide, the ocean reveals its secrets, unveiling a mesmerizing world of tidepools nestled within rocky crevices along the shoreline.

A Journey of Discovery

Tidepooling in Homer is not just an activity; it's a journey of discovery. Armed with a keen eye and a sense of wonder, adventurers of all ages can embark on a captivating exploration of these intertidal habitats. As the waters recede, a diverse array of marine life emerges, from colorful sea stars and elusive octopuses to intricate seaweeds and delicate anemones.

The Art of Tidepooling

Tidepooling is an art form, requiring patience, curiosity, and a deep respect for the natural world. It's a delicate dance between observer and observed, where every movement must be executed with care to avoid disturbing the fragile ecosystem. Take your time to observe the intricate patterns of life unfolding before you, and you'll be rewarded with moments of pure awe and wonder.

Tips for a Memorable Tidepooling Experience

Timing is Everything: Plan your tidepooling adventure around the low tide, when the most marine life is exposed. Consult a tide book or use Kachmak Bay Tide Charts online. You will want to head down 30-60 minutes before low tide. The lower the tide, the better the tidepooling will be. Once a month, Kachemak Bay gets minus tides for 5-7 days, and those are the most magical days to visit the community that is usually under the sea!

Be Respectful: Remember that tidepool creatures are delicate and easily disturbed. Avoid touching or removing any marine life, and watch your step to avoid trampling fragile habitats.

Bring the Right Gear: Equip yourself with sturdy footwear, such as waterproof boots or sturdy sandals with good traction, to navigate slippery rocks and uneven terrain. You can purchase Xtra Tuffs or Bogs from Ulmers, Nomar, or Kachemak Gear Shed in Homer. Raingear and waterproof gloves can also be helpful, as well as a bucket.

Stay Safe: Keep an eye on the tides and be mindful of your surroundings to avoid getting stranded or injured. Always prioritize safety during your tidepooling excursions.

Beaches - Where to Go in Homer and Kachemak Bay

  • Bishop’s Beach

  • Ocean Shores Hotel Beach - Park on the side of the street and hike down the hill. This is one of our favorite spots!

  • Homer Spit -

    • Under the pilings at Land’s End - sea stars galoor and fun fishing, too!

    • In front of Fresh Catch Cafe. There are also great swings there and other fun activities and shops for families!

    • Start at Fishing Hole and walk out around the rocks to the right by the pilings. There are lots of little critters so be very careful where you step!

  • Diamond Creek Beach - ¾ mile hike if you drive down Diamond Creek road and then hike down to beach. This is a steep dessent and can be muddy. I would not consider it an easy hike but it is fun and beautiful! It is 7 miles one way  to hike from Diamond Creek Beach to Bishop’s Beach.

  • Kaleen Street Beach - Drive out East End Rd. 6 miles. Right before the Tips Golf Course on the right, you will see Kaleen St. Drive about 1/2 mile down. There is very limited parking on the left side of the road. You will walk a little less than half a mile through fairly high grass and then do a short but very steep dessent to the beach. I would not consider this an easy hike, but it sure is a magical beach!

  • China Poot Bay and Jakolof Bay - both offer amazing tidepooling opportunites, but these lie on the east side of Kachemak Bay and are accessible only by boat or plane. Call Makos, Coldwater, Ashore, or another water taxi to help you plan these adventures!
